Historical Background

At the turn of the 14th century, Margery Kempe traveled far and wide. But the road she traveled most was from her home in Bishop's Lynn to Norwich. Here lived a woman called Julian, anchored in a cell attached to the smallest church in Norwich.

Julian was born in 1343, survived two plagues, and after receiving divine "showings" in 1373 became an anchoress. In that same year, Margery was born, who when 20 years old married a burgess in nearby Bishop’s Lynn. She thought she had a special calling, and came to visit Julian in Norwich in 1410 to validate this. Dana Bagshaw's dramatisations explore what led to that meeting, as well as other meetings that might have occurred over the next ten years.
